What is Marketing?

This week let’s talk about what is marketing? According to the American marketing association, “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” (https://www.ama.org/the-definition-of-marketing-what-is-marketing/) . This definition was approved in 2017. To me marketing is the means of which you communicate what your company has to offer with potential customers. Telling people about your business so they see your value and chose you.

There are numerous types of marketing! Some you’ve probably heard about (like content, email, digital, brand) and others I even just learned about (neuromarketing, undercover, drip, etc.)! Did you know, some people say there are over 200 specific marketing types? Yeah, I didn’t either, that number is crazy! There are three main types of marketing that all marketing subtypes fit into.

Relationship marketing which relies on the personal relationships you make with people. This is a process that happens over time as you build trust and connections with potential clients. This type of marketing is what I would consider the most solid as these people will be long term and repeat clients. It’s very important with any business to create and maintain a trusting relationship with customers.

The second main type is online marketing. This is of course anything in the digital marketing realm. Videos, online advertisements, sponsorships of YouTube videos, websites, social media presence and so on. This category is highly important in today’s time with the advancement of technology and communications. Older companies need not to overlook the benefit of online marketing and innovation is key.

Lastly, we have traditional marketing. This includes physical things such as customer events, getting involved in the community whether it be donating back, volunteering or community events. Printed advertisements, billboards, radio and tv spots etc. Traditional marketing basically encompasses all the “normal ways” to reach an audience that haven’t changed with fads or trends and remained a reliable way to communicate over decades or time.

I specialize in digital marketing and social media marketing. “Digital marketing is the use of the Internet, mobile devices, social media, search engines, and other channels to reach consumers.” This definition is from Investopedia. The top platforms I use for my clients are Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Order of rank depends on your company and your industry! For example, my start up client specializing in alternative protein sources has the best response and data from Facebook. However, with my photography, Instagram performs just as good, if not better than, Facebook. For a professional B2B company such as Datatech here, LinkedIn and informative videos on YouTube have a lot of traction! Digital marketing is a broad field, including attracting customers via email, content marketing, search platforms, social media, and more. “Social media marketing (SMM) is the use of social media websites and social networks to market a company’s products and services. Social media marketing provides companies with a way to reach new customers, engage with existing customers, and promote their desired culture, mission, or tone.” This definition is also from Investopedia.
